How it works

Your wall. Your art. Then the layouts, on your wall.

You bring the wall and the art. Hangsmith brings the eye.

  1. Your wall

    Take a photo of the wall, drag four dots to its corners, and type the width. On iPhone you can measure it with the camera instead, using LiDAR when your phone has it.

  2. Your art

    Photograph each piece, even at an angle. Drag the corners to the frame to straighten it, type the width, and the height is suggested from the photo.

  3. Layouts on your wall

    Two or three layouts, drawn in perspective on the photo of your own wall. Slide from Traditional to Modern, Shuffle for new ideas, or let it pick the best pieces and save the rest for later.

Then hang it

A plan to scale, and where every nail goes.

  • Switch from the photo to a flat plan, drawn to the sizes you typed. It is what you hang from.
  • The guide works the way an installer does: one level mark at the center of the group, and every piece measured from it, never from a floor or corner that may not be true.
  • Left and top edges for each piece, to the quarter inch, and whether it needs one hook or two.
  • Every layout you choose is saved on your phone, and the plan can be shared as an image.

The artistic eye

Taste, written down as rules.

Hangsmith hangs the way a gallery does. Its rules come from professional hanging practice, and an art director's review tuned them.

  • 57 to 60in

    The center line

    The middle of the group sits at gallery eye level, measured from the floor. Under a low ceiling it drops a little so the top still clears.

  • 2 to 8in

    Gaps that fit the frames

    Spacing scales with the size of the pieces. Traditional hangs close; Modern lets the wall breathe. Gaps are never squeezed below an inch and a half to cram more in.

  • 24in, 8in

    Room above and below

    Art stays at least 24in off the floor and 8in below the ceiling, with a clear margin to the corners.

  • 2 or 3

    Only layouts worth hanging

    Anything a professional would refuse to hang is never shown, and weak options are dropped rather than padded out to three. Each one is a different idea, not the same one nudged.
